Toy lists are everywhere this time of year. And all your family and friends want to know what your kids want for Christmas. This year, think beyond toys and consider some non-toy gift ideas.

Membership to Museum
Check out local museum membership programs. Often by going to a museum a few times throughout the year, a membership more than pays for itself. And you know you want to get out of the house and explore something new! Emma has enjoyed some afternoons at the local kids museums for sure.

Sometimes the membership is even considered a tax deductible donation. So, make sure to check out the benefits of the membership ,which can also include benefits at other museums. For example, a membership to the NC Zoo is also accepted at the NC Aquariums, and gets discounts at Zoos around the country. And, the Life and Science Museum in Durham, NC allows you to get into other science museums around the country for free or at a discount.

Tickets to an Event or Show
One of Emma's teachers told me recently that kids learn 50% of their vocabulary by age 5. Experiencing the world helps build this vocabulary. Look for traveling shows like Disney on Ice coming to your town. Or consider a gift certificate to a local craft and paint studio (I look forward to when Emma is ready for activities at the Painted Grape), perhaps there is a special summer camp you can give as a gift to look forward to, or more.

Books
Instead of greeting cards to go along with presents, consider a book. You know you get tired of reading the same book at bedtime night after night, so help add some variety into the reading and continue to expose your kids to new adventures, stories, and words by growing your home library of books.

Clothes
Kids grow, and grow, and grow. Think ahead to the next season to what they might need. And get something for fun -- new hairbows, extra fun socks, even underwear. It can all be fun.

Savings for College
Our kids will be 18 years old and headed off to college before we know it. Start saving now, and encourage friends and family to contribute as well. Talk to your financial advisor about setting up a college savings fund, such as a 529 plan, and depending on how you set it up everyone who contributes can get tax benefits.

Have fun this holiday season spending time with friends and family, and good luck with assembling all the new toys! Remember, not every gift has to be a toy.
